Autorun.inf is a program or a feature in MS Windows that autorun a certain action whenever you insert a pendrive/flashdrive and/or a new dvd/cd automatically, but it is also being used to spread virus in pendrives/flashdrives.
There are many ways to remove autorun.inf virus, it can be removed using CMD command, various autorun.inf removal tool and there’s a prevention from being infected by disabling autorun in the system.
Manual Removal/Remover of Autorun.inf virus:
- Boot your system in Safe Mode Command Prompt Only. (can be done by restarting your pc and press F8 before the windows screen shows up)
- When the CMD prompt shows up (black and white screen),
- type in CD\ (to get you to the main directory of C:)
- then DIR /AH (to list all files that are hidden, if there’s autorun.inf then you are infected)
- type AUTORUN.INF (shows what’s inside the autorun.inf file, whatever’s inside it’s a virus since )
- for example, it shows “open=virus.exe” remember it.
- Type ATTRIB -H -R -S C:\AUTORUN.INF (it unhides the autorun.inf)
- DEL C:\AUTORUN.INF
- Still at CMD Command, to make sure the virus won’t start again during start-up, type MSCONFIG
- System Configuration Utility will show up, look for the virus carrier shown at step 2, which is virus.exe in our example
- uncheck virus.exe the OK. that will stop it from running again during start-up.
To Disable Autorun in your system (flashdrive, pendrive, cd, dvd, usb, etc…)
- Open REGEDIT (Start>RUN> type REGEDIT)
- Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
- right click on the space then choose DWORD, type NoDriveTypeAutoRun as it’s name
- Right click NoDriveTypeAutoRun then modify
- key in 000000ff as value data.
